PhiClaw Closes Its First Angel Investment. Dr. Alexander Rios Joins as Chief Medical Officer.
PhiClaw, the HIPAA-compliant AI employee for medical practices, has closed its first angel investment. The investor is Dr. Alexander Rios, one of our earliest customers. He is also joining the company as Chief Medical Officer.
A customer first, an investor second
Dr. Rios did not find PhiClaw on a cap table. He found it the way most of our customers do: a practice drowning in front-desk work, phone calls, notes and follow-ups, and a doctor who wanted an AI employee that could actually do the work under a signed Business Associate Agreement (the HIPAA contract that makes us legally responsible for patient data).
He ran PhiClaw inside his own practice first. He saw what it does well, where it needs a clinician looking over its shoulder, and what it should do next. Then he asked to invest. There is no better due diligence than using the product every day with real patients.
"Grateful for the support from someone who used the product first and fell in love with it."
John Gonzalez, founder of PhiClaw
What the capital does
The initial capital is in the bank. Dr. Rios has also verbally expressed interest in investing an additional $125,000 over the next months if we hit our milestones. We want to be precise about that: it is an expression of interest tied to results, not a closed round, and we are not running a fundraising process.
The money goes where it always has: engineers who sit with practices, the HIPAA infrastructure the agent runs on, and the products the AI employee needs to do its job. See who we are hiring and what we are building.
What a Chief Medical Officer does at PhiClaw
An AI employee that answers phones, drafts notes, prepares prescriptions and submits claims touches clinical work every hour. Somebody with a medical license has to own the line between what the AI may do on its own and what needs a clinician's sign-off. That is the CMO's job.
- Clinical guardrails. Which workflows run unsupervised, which ones pause for a doctor, and how every clinical output is reviewed.
- Specialty roadmap. Which specialties and workflows PhiClaw builds next, informed by running the product in a live practice.
- The doctor's voice in every decision. Pricing, onboarding, the custom EHR, the headless EHR: the question "would a doctor accept this?" now has a doctor answering it.
Why this matters if you are evaluating PhiClaw
Most AI companies selling to doctors have never run a practice. PhiClaw now has a physician who used the product, invested his own money in it, and leads its clinical direction. For a practice deciding whether to let an AI employee near patient data, that is the kind of signal that should matter more than a feature list.
Nothing about our commitments changes. We still sign a BAA with every practice before any patient data is involved, we still run on HIPAA-eligible infrastructure with subprocessor BAAs in place, and the plans on our pricing page are the same plans.
What is next
Three things we are shipping with this round behind us:
- A dedicated forward-deployed engineer plan. $5,000 a month, no implementation fee, 20 hours a week of custom engineering and a weekly call. Details on the pricing page.
- Marrow, the headless EHR. The chart as an API, with no front end, for AI agents and practices that want to own their screens. Read about it on the products page and in our manifesto on why the big EHRs forced us to build it.
- Hiring. Forward-deployed engineers and closers with deep EHR or medical SaaS experience. See careers.

Frequently asked questions
Who is Dr. Alexander Rios?
Dr. Alexander Rios is a physician who was one of PhiClaw's earliest customers. He ran PhiClaw in his own practice before becoming the company's first angel investor, and he has now joined PhiClaw as Chief Medical Officer.
What does a Chief Medical Officer do at an AI company?
At PhiClaw the CMO brings a practicing doctor's judgment into the product: which workflows the AI employee may run on its own, which ones need a clinician's sign-off, how clinical notes and prescriptions are reviewed, and which specialties the roadmap serves next.
Is PhiClaw raising more money?
The initial angel capital is in the bank. Dr. Rios has verbally expressed interest in investing an additional $125,000 over the coming months if PhiClaw hits its milestones. That is an expression of interest, not a closed round, and PhiClaw is not running a public fundraising process.
Does this change PhiClaw's pricing, BAA or data handling?
No. PhiClaw still signs a Business Associate Agreement with every practice, still runs on HIPAA-eligible infrastructure, and the plans on the pricing page are unchanged by the investment.
Want the AI employee a doctor invested in?
PhiClaw signs a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) with your practice and runs on HIPAA-eligible infrastructure, with BAAs in place with our subprocessors AWS (including Amazon Bedrock) and Convex.
